Lightning Arrestor

I had a near miss with a lightning arrester. I went on a touble call and found that a CSP pot was bad. We dont rehang CSP's so i had to go back to the office and get a T bracket, cut out and arrester for the convertional. We have two different distabution voltages in the rural area that i cover, (7200 and 4000), so we have 3kv arresters and 10kv arrresters. The 3kv are usually small in comparison to the 10kv. Not always true. I grabbed what i thought was a 3kv arrester from the shelf and threw it onto the back of the truck and hung it with the cut out. Needless to say, when i went to put the stinger on it exploded. I was about arms reach away from it but luckily it blew out the other side of the arrester. Thank you Jesus. The only thing i got besides ringing ears and a dirty shorts was the ground wire flew over and slapped me on the arm. Becarefull if you work more than one primary voltage. Check the top or you arrester and make sure you have the proper size for the voltage. Some times they look alike. Don't assume, it aint good for your Fruit of the Looms.
